Exfoliating can get confusing. Not only are there loads of different options for how to do it, there are even people who suggest you shouldn’t exfoliate at all. We are here to tell you exfoliating is totally safe - and you definitely should be doing it if you want that "glow," you just need to do it the right way.

There are a few different ways you can exfoliate your face, including:

  • Chemical exfoliants – i.e AHA and BHA
  • Granular or physical exfoliants – i.e brown sugar, sea salt, coffee
  • Exfoliating tools – i.e gloves, dry body brush, pore vacuum

Keep reading to learn more about exfoliating and why you need to keep this step in your skincare routine.

What is Exfoliation?

According to healthline, exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin using a chemical, granular substance, or exfoliation tool.

Exfoliating is the second step after cleansing when washing your face. By removing dead skin cells, you can now provide a smooth base for your serum and moisturiser to penetrate your skin more thoroughly. Exfoliating doesn't just feel good, it truly brightens your complexion and improves the appearance of your skin.

What are the Benefits of Exfoliating?

  • Cleans and unclogs pores
  • Removes dead skin to reveal smoother, brighter skin beneath
  • Increases cellular turnover which slows with age
  • Reduces acne
  • Helps the penetration of other skincare products
  • Evens out skin tone
  • Boosts circulation and lymphatic drainage

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

As a general rule, less is more. You don’t want to go overboard as that can cause redness, flaking and irritation. As for specifics on how often you should exfoliate, it really depends on your skin type.

Sensitive skin: You should be extra gentle and exfoliate with a warm, wet washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliant with lower active ingredient percentages once or twice a week, max.

Oily skin: Your skin has a higher tolerance for the heavy-duty stuff, so you can exfoliate 3-5 times per week.

Normal to combination skin: You can use either of these methods with optimal results up to three times a week.
